NEDEN BU KİTAP?
Önce instagramda başlayan, sonrasında facebook ve twittera yayılan, şimdilerde kendi web sitesi bile olan, sanal alemde başlayıp gerçek alemde devam eden dostane ilişkiler içerisindeki farklı şehirlerdeki insanların oluşturduğu bir grup olan Kitap Ağacı grubuyla birlikte bir kitap okumayı denemek istediğim için.

KONUSU (TANITIM YAZISINDAN):
Büyük Bunalım (1929 - Great Depression) sonrasında Amerika'nın Güney Eyaletleri'nden birinde bir zenci beyaz bir kızın ırzına geçmekle suçlanır. Önyargılar, şiddet ve riyakârlıkla beslenen Güneyli erişkinlerin ırk ve sınıf ayrımı konusundaki mantıksız yaklaşımlarını Scout ve Jem Finch adlarındaki iki çocuğun ağzından keyifli bir dille bize aktaran roman, aynı zamanda kent halkının vicdanına karşı tek başına karşı koyan bir erkeğin mücadelesini de anlatmaktadır.

DEĞERLENDİRMEM:
Bu kitabı 1993 veya 1994 yılında lise kütüphanemizden ödünç alıp okumuştum. O kadar beğenmiştim ki lise boyunca kitabı birkaç kez daha kütüphaneden ödünç alıp anneme ve yengeme de zorla okutmuştum.

Blogumun sosyal medyada tanıtımını daha yoğun yapabilmek için aktif tutmaya başladığım ve kullandıkça da çok keyif almaya başladığım Instagram'da dikkatimi çeken bir okuma topluluğu vardı. Adı Kitap Ağacı. Uzaktan aktivitelerini izlediğim bir grupken Bülbülü Öldürmek'i okumaya karar verdiklerini görünce katılmadan duramadım. Böylelikle bir taşta üç kuş vurdum: 1. Ne zamandır bu romanı tekrar okumak istiyordum. Çünkü kitabı çok sevdiğimi hatırlıyordum sadece ama konusunu unutmuştum. 2. Kitap Ağacı Ailesi sanal ortamda bile o kadar samimi ve davetkar gelmişti ki aralarına bir karışasım vardı. 3. Yasaklanmış bir kitap olan Bülbülü Öldürmek Kış Okuma Şenliği'nde de okuma hedeflerime uyan bir kitaptı. Hal böyle olunca Ekim sonundaki İzmir seyahatim sırasında Alsancak Sevgi Yolu'ndan alıverdim Altın Kitaplar 1976 baskısını. Böylelikle Bülbülü Öldürmek kütüphanemde de yerini almış oldu.

Nihayetinde Harper Lee'nin ömr-ü hayatında yazdığı bu tek ve dev eserini yaklaşık 20 yıl aradan sonra bir kez daha severek, elimden düşürmeyerek, evde, işte, serviste, iş seyahatim sırasında otelde, havaalanında, uçakta Kitap Ailesi'nin onlarca üyesiyle birlikte eş zamanlı okudum. Romandaki olayların o kadar içine girdim ki Jem ve Scout'un yanında ben de koşturdum sokaklarda. Onların korkularını, heyecanlarını, hayal kırıklıklarını yaşadım. O mahkeme salonunda ben de ter döktüm. Haksızlıklara ben de baş kaldırdım ama sesimi duyuramadım, Atticus'a kızdım, öfkelendim ama kendimi onun yanında ben de güvende hissettim.

Okuduğum kitaplar arasında en zarif şekilde kurgulanmış kitap diyebileceğim Bülbülü Öldürmek'i okuduğunuzda hangi nedenlerle yasaklanmış olabileceğini çok çabuk anlıyorsunuz. Romanı bitirip aldığınız keyfin etkisiyle Harper Lee daha başka neler yazdı acaba diye baktığınızda da bu romanın yazarın ilk, tek ve son romanı olduğunu görüyorsunuz. Romanıyla Pulitzer, film adaptasyonuyla (eşimle izledik ve filmi de çok beğendik) Oscar ödülü kazanan bu kitap her kütüphanede mutlaka bulunması gereken bir baş yapıt.

NEDEN BU KİTAP?
Bu kitabı bir sahaf ziyaretim sırasında almış, "hemen okurum" demiştim ama elimde okunacak kitap sayısı 100’ün altına inmeyince işler planladığım gibi gitmiyor her zaman tabii. Bu sene başında okumaya resmen yemin ettim, kendi kendime sözler verdim. Hatta daha da garanti olsun diye katıldığım reading challenge’larda (2013 Sci-Fi Reader Challenge, Semi-Charmed Summer 2013 Book Challenge ve ev sahipliğini yaptığım Okuma Şenliği | Yaz 2013) okunacak kitap yaptım Mesaj’ı. Amacıma ulaştım (Aynı durum Ağustos ayında okumayı planladığım Cesur Yeni Dünya için de geçerli).

KONUSU:
Bir gök bilimci olan Eleanor Arroway senelerdir uzaydan gelen radyo frekansları dinlemektedir. Araştırma ödeneğinin kesilmeye yakın olduğu bir zamanda bir mesaj almaya başlar.

Eleanor, aldığı mesajın tamamına erişebilmek için başka ülkelerdeki radyo frekansı dinleyebilen gök bilim merkezleriyle iletişime geçer ve bir anda mesaj bütün dünyaya yayılır. Mesajı çözmeye kafa yoran bilim insanları mesajın kısa bir kısmını çözümleyebilirler ve çözümlenen mesajda 1936’da Hitler'in Berlin olimpiyatlarının açılış töreninde yaptığı konuşmasına denk gelirler. Tüm dünya bir anda panikler, nasıl bir mesaj verilmeye çalışıldığını anlamaya çalışır ve hatta korkar. Mesajın nedeni ise TV yayınlarının ilk yapılmaya başlandığı zamanlardan yakaladıkları bir görüntü uzak bir uzaylı ırkın dünyalılara “sizi duyduk” deme çalışmasıdır yalnızca. Romanın kalan yarısı ise gönderilen mesajın gerçek içeriğinin çözümlenmesi ve sonrasında dünya genelinde alınan kararlar ile bir grup bilim insanının başından geçenler hakkındadır.

DEĞERLENDİRMEM:
Mesaj, Carl Sagan’ın 1985 yılında yazıp yayınladığı bir romandır. Carl Sagan da yazarlıktan öte bir bilim insanıdır aslında. Kendisi gökbilimci, astrobiyolog ve astrofizik uzmanıdır. Bilimin geniş halk kitlelerine sevdirilmesi misyonunu üstlenerek yazarlık da yapan Sagan’ın bu romanındaki bilimsel gerçeklerin zengince kullanımının yanı sıra romanda geçen olaylara eklediği sosyal, politik ve teolojik boyut kendisinin ne kadar usta bir yazar olduğunu göstermektedir. Kitapta yoğun olarak kullanılan matematik ve astrofizik öğeleri herhangi bir okuyucunun rahatlıkla takip edebileceği yalınlıkta sunulmuştur. Benim en beğendiğim kısım dünya düzeninin mesajın çözülmesinden sonra ne kadar alt üst olduğu, akların karaların, milli, dini ve sosyal kaygıların ortaya nasıl döküldüğü ve çoğunluğun değişime gösterdiği direnç ve bilinmeyene duyulan korku oldu. Bilim kurgu kitaplarında bu kadar farklı boyutu aynı anda yakalayıp aktarabilen yazar sayısı sınırlıdır. İşte bu nedenle hazır güzelce de çekilmiş bir filmi varken Mesaj’ı okuyun, sonra da filmini izleyin derim ben.

Okuma Şenliği kapsamında pek çok katılımcıya göre geriden gelsem de 400 sayfadan uzun bir kitap okuyarak kendime 25 puan verdim :)

NEDEN BU KİTAP?
Çok uzun zamandır okumayı planladığım için...

KONUSU:
Hindistan’dan Kanada’ya giden bir yük gemisi, içindeki neredeyse tüm canlılarla birlikte batar. Bir cankurtaran filikası, uçsuz bucaksız Pasifik Okyanusu'nun ortasında yapayalnız kalır. Geminin batışı sırasında hayatta kalmayı başarıp da filikada kendisine yer bulanlar ise bir sırtlan, kırık bacaklı bir zebra, Portakal Suyu adında bir orangutan, Richard Parker adında üç yüz kiloluk bir Bengal kaplanı ve Pi adlı 16 yaşında Hintli bir çocuktur. Pi'nin hayvanat bahçesi işleten ve hayvanlarıyla Hindistan’dan Kanada’ya göç etmeye çalışan ailesi, batan gemide yaşamını kaybetmiştir.

Pi, kurtuluş yok gibi görünen bu okyanusta zayıf bir sandalda yanındaki hayvanlarla birlikte hayatta kalma savaşı verir ve keskin zekası ve zooloji bilgisiyle hayatta kalmayı başarır. 200+ gün sürecek yolculukta Pi'nin başına gelenlerin öyküsüdür Pi’nin Yaşamı.

DEĞERLENDİRMEM:
Goodreads isimli şimdi hemen hemen tüm kitapseverlerin bildiği ve çoğunun üyesi olduğu internet sitesini 2009 yılı sonuna doğru keşfetmiştim. Goodreads’de ne var ne yok diye araştırırken gördüğüm ve okunacaklar listeme ilk eklediğim beş kitaptan biriydi Pi’nin Yaşamı (Diğer dördü Kar Çiçeği ve Sırlar Yelpazesi, Loto, Zaman Yolcusunun Karısı ve Oscar Wao’nun Tuhaf Kısa Yaşamı. Bir yerlere not etmişim bu kitapları. O nedenle bu kadar net hatırlıyorum).

Her bahanede kitap satın alan bir insan olan bendeniz bu kitapta bir türlü %30 indirim yakalayamadığımdan kitabı alamamış, sonrasında unutmuştum (İnternetten kitap alırken en az %30 indirim yakalamaya çalışıyorum genelde). Ne zaman ki Pi’nin Yaşamı’nın 3D filmi gösterime girdi ve İnkılâp Yayınevi kitabı yeni kapakla çıkardı, o zaman hatırladım kitabı ve yakaladım indirimi.

Pi’nin Yaşamı’nı seveceğimi biliyordum. Konusunu, adını ve yeni kapağını çok beğenmiştim, sevmeyip de ne yapacaktım. Yazarın bazı kısımlarda olayları biraz abarttığını düşünsem de sonradan kızdım kendime. Bir genç, bir kaplan, bir filika, 200+ gün: Ne bekliyordum ki? Olayları Pi’den dinlemek çok güzeldi. O kadar konsantre oldum ki bir ara yatakta ayaklarımı uzatmış oturup kitabı okurken filikada sallanıyormuşum gibi geldi. Aynı günün gecesi Portakal Suyu rüyama girdi, hatta sayıklamışım bile ama ne dediğimi söylersem spoiler olur, söylemiyorum.

Şimdi sırada filmi izlemek var. İçim gitmişti sinemada oynarken ama kural kuraldır: Kitabı okuma niyetim varsa kitabın filmini veya dizisini izlemek yasak.

NEDEN BU KİTAP?
Türk kitapseverlerin Goodreads'te oluşturdukları ve seçtikleri kitapları sene başından beri severek izlediğim Ex Libris grubunun Kasım ayı için seçtiği kitaptı bu kitap. Sene başından beri de bir türlü becerememiştim ayın kitabını doğru ayda okumayı. Şeytanın bacağını bu kitapla kırdım ve Ex Libris'in gerçekten de ayın kitabı olarak iyi kitap seçtiğini de bir kere daha teyit etmiş oldum.

KONUSU:
Middlesex, hermafrodit (çift cinsiyetli) bir insan olan Cal(liope)'nin, onun anne babasının, babasının annesinin ve babasının, yani üç jenerasyonun öyküsü. Cal, Calliope olarak doğmuş, kız olarak yetiştirilmiş ama genetik olarak erkek bir kişidir.Eugenides bu romanında Cal'ın hikayesini onu çift cinsiyetli olarak doğmasına neden olan geninin köklerine inerek anlatıyor. Bu uzun gen hikayesi Kurtuluş Savaşı sırasında Bursa'da bir Rum köyünde başlıyor, oradan Michigan'a uzanıyor. Middlesex'te Cal'ın hayat hikayesini kökenine inerek, bu üç jenerasyonun başından geçen olaylara (sosyal, politik ve ekonomik seviyede) da değinerek 640 sayfaya sığıyor.

DEĞERLENDİRMEM:
Öncelikle belirteyim ki Middlesex 2012 yılında okuduğum en iyi kitaplar listemde 2. sıraya yerleşti (1. sırada halen Gün Olur Asra Bedel var). Kitabı bu kadar tutmamın nedeni 2/4 Girit göçmen, 1/4 İskeçe göçmeni ve 1/4 Muğlalı olmamdan (ben kendimi İzmirli olarak tanımlıyorum ama) kaynaklı olabilir. Kitap özünde ABD'de yaşayan Rum göçmenlerin hikayesini anlatıyor ne de olsa. Yoksa "çift cinsiyetlilik" kavramının başlı başına enteresan bir konu başlığı olması mı bilemiyorum ama başka nedenler de var tabii bana bu kitabı sevdiren.

Middlesex'teki tüm olaylar yetişkin Cal tarafından anlatılıyor ama romanın ortalarına kadar Cal'in yetişkinliğe giden hayat hikayesini öğrenemiyorsunuz aslında. Yerli/yabancı yorumlardan gördüğüm kadarıyla da pek çok okuyucu için kopma noktasını bu oluşturuyor. Cal'in üç jenerasyon arası, ileri geri giden ve aynen bir ipekböceği kozası gibi örülen olaylar zincirine dahil olmayı başarırsanız kozanın içine girip, roman bitince de kelebek olup uçuyorsunuz. Bunu başaramayanlar ise kitabı yarıda bırakıyorlar (ve çok şey kaçırıyorlar). Bu kitabı okuyacaklara kısa bir not: Cal'in babaannesi ve dedesinin Anadolu'dan ABD'ye uzanan göçleri biraz ağır aksak anlatılmış. Lütfen buna takılıp ilginiz dağılmasın.

Ben kitabı ön gördüğümden çok daha hızlı ama yeterince sindire sindire okudum. Yazar bir hermafroditin hikayesini o kadar doğal ve detaylı anlatmıştı ki, "Kendisini mi anlatmış acaba?" diye düşündüm. Cal dışındaki aile fertleri öyle güzel betimlenmişti ki üç boyutlu gibiydi.

İnkılap Kitabevi çevirilerini sevdiğim yayınevlerinden. Solmaz Kamuran'ın çevirisi gayet başarılı ama İnkılap aynı başarıyı kapak seçiminde gösterememiş ne yazık ki.

Sözün özü Middlesex uzun romanlardan gözü korkmayanlar için okunması gereken bir kitap. Uzun roman alerjiniz varsa, ilk kısmı atlatmayı başaramamanız konusunda endişeliyim sadece.

When I was reading this book...: ... I kept trying to figure out why I wanted to read this book at the first place.

WHY THIS BOOK?
Honestly, I don't know. Maybe because it was listed as a classic in many different lists. Maybe because it was an award-winning book. Maybe because it was one of 1001 books you should read before you die. Maybe because it was banned.

THE STORY:
It is the story of Harry Angstrom (Rabbit) who runs from one unpleasant situation to another, ruining the lives of those he lives behind. He tries to straighten out, but his despair keeps overwhelming him. So he runs, over and over. In short, it is the story of Rabbit is a sociopath, a user of people, a loner who deep down doesn't really believe other people exist in the same sense that he himself exists.

MY COMMENTS:
I, sincerely, do not understand why this book is a classic, why it is chosen as one of 1001 books, why it was awarded so many times. I was really annoyed with the main character and I couldn't find a way to relate with him at all. Many reviewers claim that  John Updike created such a sociopath that any reader can at least partially understand. Well, I don't. I remember myself getting really annoyed and pissed off when I was reading "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger but I liked that book. This one was a failure though.

None of the characters, including Rabbit himself, make sense out of his or her existence at some point in time in the book. Rabbit is never once grounded. All his longing is for the past,or for some immediate temporal gratification in the present. Rabbit's wife, Janice, likewise has no moment that makes sense to her in the overall scheme of things. The same is true of Ruth Leonard, the prostitute. And over against her, is the Reverend Jack Eccles, who would heal Rabbit, but in the end is as confused as anybody else in the novel. Believe me, even summarizing all these is boring itself.

It's a depressing, embarrassing, provoking and sadly, realistic book. That's why it managed to get 2 stars from me instead of 1.

APPLICABLE CHALLENGES:
It was my first (and probably last) John Updike novel so I can count it for New Author Challenge.
At least the book title was useful so I can count this book for What An Animal Reading Challenge.
After I bought the book, I saw some negative reviews and decided to include it a book about which I've heard bad things for Semi-Charmed Kind of Life's Summer 2012 Book Challenge.
It is also in my list for The Classics Club.

WHY THIS BOOK?
Being a late comer to the great world of sci-fi literature, it’s been a must-read book for me for quite some time. I bought the whole series long ago but I didn’t started reading it. Thanks to a book challenge, I read it finally.

THE STORY:
It is the story of Arthur Dent who ends up leaving the Earth seconds before the Earth is demolished. Of course, Arthur didn’t do on his own. Ford Prefect, an outsider who happened to be in Earth at the time to make research for the latest edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, helps him. Arthur and Ford start an adventurous journey through the galaxy. They come across many interesting characters, like two-headed, three-armed Zaphod Beeblebrox, Zaphod’s girlfriend, Trillian, Marvin (the most depressed android ever). If you want to learn about why we die or why we are born, you should read this book.

MY COMMENTS:
It is the funniest, most enjoyable sci-fi book I read till now. It’s a classic and one of 1001 books you should read before you die. It was a perfect summer read for me. I laughed quite a lot throughout the book even though I was reading the Turkish translation. Douglas Adams wrote such a masterpiece that not even a tiny bit of laughter gets lost in translation.

I ended up reading this book as it was published in the year I was born: 1979. I loved the dose of sci-fi content. I liked the sarcasm. From time to time, I got a bit disconnected with some of the characters but it wasn’t a big deal as I quickly found my way. I loved the android with manic depression. Wouldn’t you like it?

It was nice to get away from the regular plots I have been reading lately. It was a nice summer refreshment. An entertaining book I recommend to all (even those who think they wouldn’t like sci-fi).

It was my first Douglas Adams novel so I can count it for New Author Challenge.
This was one of the books I picked up as time travel for WFTM Science Fiction Reader Challenge.

WHY THIS BOOK?:
A couple of years ago many people around me (especially at work) read this book and everyone was so impressed. I was bucy with other books at the time so I missed the book's "popular reading period" in Turkey. After my husband's great St. Valentine's present (my gorgeous Kindle Touch), I got kindle version of the same book. I decided to start reading this book on the day we were leaving for our 10-day long spring vacation in Spain. I thought it'd be nice to read a popular apocalyptic eco-thriller on the plane and on the trains as it was suggested by many as an "airport novel".

THE STORY:
The book opens with a series of random events: fishermen going missing in Peru, whales attacking tourist boats in Canada, big colonies of tubeworms gathering around methane hydrate deposits in the North Sea... The only common thing about these incidents is that they are all ocean related. Scientists around the world start to face with the fact that something unusual going on around the world. So a task force of scientists is set up to study the phenomena and the possible causes of this under the auspices of the US Government. This leads to further disasters.

MY COMMENTS:
Although the plot of "The Swarm" is strong, its execution was a big disappointment for me. I couldn't help but think (like a good majority of the previous reviewers of this book) that the author had the idea of getting a disaster movie out of his book. There were many references to characters looking like well-known movie actors, In addition, giving the US Government a controlling role in the research aspect of the plot seemed strange to me at first (Note that the author is German) but then it appeared as Schätzing was in a way welcoming Hollywood movie makers.

Noone can deny the fact that there lies a deep research beneath this book. Actually, too much of the book was full of complex and detailed scientific explanations, which reminded me of some books of Jules Verne (such as From the Earth to the Moon). Although brief summaries would suffice, these deep scientific explanations appeared so frequently that I was distracted from the core plot.

My problem with the book was pretty simple: Every time the author started to speed up things, he immediately let it go by either some lenghty piece of character development or unnecessarily detailed scientific content. For instance, while you are reading about a tsunami, it may suddenly be interrupted by a random character considering a three-some with a couple of Norwegian guys. I was so annoyed by such interruptions so it took me ages to finish the book off.

Still, if you are interested in marine science or ecology of the oceans. It may turn out to be an enjoyable read for you.

WHY THIS BOOK?:
It was back in December 2010 when I decided to read ALL books of Jules Verne. It was mainly because I was impressed by the new set of Jules Verne books in Turkish offered by one of my favorite publishers in Turkey, Ithaki. I started with the lovely story of Dr. Ox (Dr. Ox’s Experiment: The Drama in the Air / I owe a review to this entertaining book) and I continued.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is my 6th Jules Verne book and I’ve been thinking about creating a perpetual “Jules Verne Readalong” but I haven’t mind up my mind yet. Plus, I’m not sure if people would participate. Maybe it’d work if I make it bilingual. Well, this is not the right place to think about it.

THE STORY:
It is the story of an extraordinary voyage of Professor Lidenbrock, his nephew Axel, and their trusty Icelandic guide, Hans. When Professor Lidenbrock discovers an ancient parchment suggesting a journey to the center of the Earth is possible, he wastes no time in pulling his nephew and ward, Axel, into an expedition, through a crater in an extinct volcano in Iceland into the center of the Earth. Harry actually sees no good that can come of this expedition, but he has no option but to agree.

MY COMMENTS:
I already made up my mind. I will read ALL books by Jules Verne but I hesitated a bit before I start reading this one. I had read “From the Earth to the Moon” back in May 2011 and I didn’t like it as it felt like I was reading a science book. Then I decided to take a look at some of the reviews posted in Goodreads and/or by bloggers about “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. I saw that there were a lot more negative reviews than I expected. Then, I again postponed reading it till this April.

As this is my 6th Jules Verne novel, I can boldly say that Verne’s writing style is generally “pure, hard core science fiction”. He uses a great deal of scientific explanation, theories and analysis, which is my main source of admiration to his work. “Journey to the Center of the Earth” differs though.

Its scientific component is not as dominant as that of “From the Earth to the Moon”. It is not futuristic. It is about an extraordinary travel that occurred during the time period the characters lived in. The plot involves the history of the world so it somehow relates to us all. I liked the way the narrator, Axel explaining the meaning of scientific terms and past discoveries.

Having written this book in 1864, as usual, Jules Verne was way ahead of his time and peers. It’s hard to understand how he managed to gather this much diversified scientific facts all together. Many sci-fi authors hardly do it today although we have access to almost everything thanks to internet.

Although what happens in the book seems to be far from reality, I really enjoyed it. When I was reading it, I could easily imagine what the travelers were going through. I felt the danger, suspense and despair Axel went through. I felt like I was travelling with them to the center of the earth!

WHY THIS BOOK?
Some time ago a friend asked me why I didn’t read any sci-fi books. He asked me this because I was spending such a great amount of time watching TV series of sci-fi channel and I was getting literally depressed when my favourites (like Battlestar Galactica or Stargate SG1) end. I just couldn’t answer him and said proudly that I just finished reading Prelude to Foundation. Of course, this was not the case. When I compare the time I spend on watching sci-fi series and movies, I cannot even guess how many sci-fi books I could have read. Why did I choose not to read sci-fi books till 2010? Believe me, I still do not have the answer but as a quick reaction to my friend’s question, I grabbed Nineteen Eighty-Four of George Orwell off the shelf.

THE STORY:
The main character of the book is Winston Smith, a member of the party in power in Oceania. “The Party”, which rules over Oceania, enforces its rules over its citizens with the help of thought police. The thought police virtually spies on everyone via small televisions that cannot be turned off. Via these telescreens the police broadcast propaganda. If a citizen happens to get involved in a disapproved act or conversation, that person gets a visit from the thought police and disappears without a trace.

Winston works in the Ministry of Truth and his duties involve deleting all records of a person's name after s/he is taken by the thought police. Additionally, he edits newspapers in which prominent party members made predictions which turned out to be false, lowers estimates of production goals to make it appear as though everything is in surplus, and destroys or rewrites books which encourage or promote individualistic or other free-thinking behaviour.

MY COMMENTS:
When I finished reading the book, I was telling everyone I didn’t like a single thing about it. But it was a classic. Loved by many, banned by many… Then I started thinking about it by considering the fact that Orwell wrote it back in 1949 even before my parents were born. It was a relatively short novel but I noticed it gave me so much to think about. Then, I realized what I didn’t like was not the book itself but the things happening: the idea of Big Brother, thought police, weird ministries like Ministry of Truth and Ministry of Love, constant scarcity of resources and the whole idea of totalitarian mindset.

Being a financial analyst, it put me back into thoughts for macroeconomic policies: 3 nations constantly at war, in a never ending turmoil over ideologies. The main aim was to create a continuous need for constant production. The war was designed as a means to consume goods to create an economy in which everyone is always in need of something which is currently unavailable. Aren’t wars always the best solution to boost demand?

It was hard for me to read and imagine and think over the part where Winston meets the thought police. I just couldn’t continuously read the book when I reached the interrogations and torture sessions. It is not because I cannot read about torture but the idea of thought police and the power it held, the “Big Brother” watching over, the slogan of “War is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength” were just not acceptable to me. As I read along, I always thought about whether something like this would happen for real one day. If the ideas of a book keeps my mind busy this long, I must admit it is a good book.

WHY THIS BOOK?
We agreed to read this book for our online book club back in April 2010. I was so happy that we chose this book because I read another version of this book during my high school years. It was a special edition for intermediate level English learners. At the end, I did read the book but couldn’t participate in the discussions because of my business travels. Such a pity…

THE STORY:
The Hound of the Baskervilles is considered as one of the most prestigious writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The mystery begins with Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes finding a cane that was left in their office. As usual, Holmes astonishes Dr. Watson by guessing the person who left it and predicting his return to their office. Their visitor, Doctor James Mortimer briefs them on the facts regarding a mystery he has found himself about a curse brought on by a Baskerville ancestor.

The setting for the story of the Hound of the Baskervilles came from Doyle’s visit to the English moors. While he was there, he visited prehistoric ruins and heard tales of missing prisoners and a local legend about a dog. From there, he developed the tale of the Baskerville hound.

MY COMMENTS:
It was a light and easy read. I believe that is why Sherlock Holmes mysteries are so popular. They are easy to read and quickly paced. Holmes’s observation power and deduction skills are so admirable. With a little trick, Doyle makes the reader think that with a little help and lots of practice, it is possible to replicate how Holmes solves the mysteries.
